Roof Concern: My exterior paint is peeling

Type of Concern: Moderate

Cause of Concern:  The good news is that your peeling paint is telling you something is not right! It’s a warning sign.
The first thing to do is to find out where the moisture is coming from.

There are a few different causes of peeling paint.

Peeling paint may be due to improper surface preparation, time (old paint will eventually peel), poor choice in paint or worse, and most probable, moisture. Moisture is the number one cause of peeling paint. As we all know, moisture and structures do not go well together. Mold, mildew, and rot can cause a whole range of problems. Too many to list here.

The good news is that your peeling paint is telling you something is not right! It’s a warning sign. And while it’s a bummer you have a problem, you know you need to fix it.

The first thing to do is to find out where the moisture is coming from.

Peeling paint can actually be a result of a roof problem. Water improperly running off your roof, or a leak that penetrates the roof decking and continues down the sides of your home, are potential causes of paint peeling.

Course of Action: Find where that moisture is coming from!

The first thing to do is a process of elimination. Is your paint job old? Do you know what kind of paint was used and how it was applied? If you can’t narrow it down quickly, investigate and see if you can determine where the water is coming from. If you can’t determine where the moisture is coming from, find a professional who can help! The last thing you want is to create a larger problem than wanted simply from ignoring the peeling paint.
