Pros and Cons of Metal Roofs
There are a lot of factors when choosing the different types of roofing material. We have covered some of the factors you should consider here. This post gives you a more in depth look at the specifics of metal roofing, to help assist you in your decision.
Metal Roofing Cons:
Cost- Metal Roofing is particularly costly up front. The material is more expensive itself. Most contractors also have to charge a higher premium for installation of metal. It is more complicated than other materials to install. The quality of the material is also higher than that of asphalt shingles, therefore you pay a higher premium for a better product.
Noisy- Metal roofing can be noisy during intense rainstorm and hail. However, with the proper installation it is not as loud as it used to be.
Installation Issues- Metal roofing is more complicated to install. You have a larger risk of leaking if your contractor does not properly install your roof. To Reduce this risk, look for contractors who are certified in metal roof installation or have a long history of doing so.
Larger Repairs- Roof repairs on metal roofs are more complicated then asphalt roofing. With shingles, only a small section of your roof is exposed during a repair. Larger portions of the roof often need to be removed in order for it to be repaired.
Denting- Yes, it is true that metal roofs can dent. This occurs from debris (anything from trees to a kid’s baseball) or someone walking on a metal roof without knowing how to properly do so. Roof repairs or maintenance may be more difficult for the homeowner if he/she does not want to get up on their roof.
Metal Roofing Pros:
Long lifetime- 50 years- Metal panels last a long time. They can last 50 plus years if put on by a certified roofing professional.
Environmentally Friendly- Many metal panels nowadays are made from recycled materials. They can also be recycled after they have outlived their long lifetime. This is a huge bonus to help the environment.
Heat Reflective- The reflectivity from the metal panels helps keep cooling costs low in the house.
Economically friendly over time- One of the reasons that metal roofing is so expensive is that the material is more durable than other materials. The fact that metal roofing panels have a longer lifetime means that it is more expensive. However, if you plan on staying in your home for a while, you will not have worry about the cost of replacing your roof again. This is a savings over time!
Sheds rain and snow easily- Do you live in an area with a lot of precipitation? Metal panels help the rain and snow run off due to their smooth surface. There is a lesser chance of having an area that puddles due to the near seamless arrangement of the metal panels.
